Homegrowne at PLEI

I had the chance to see Homegrowne perform on New Years Day and they were amazing…as usual.  I had never been to a show like this before. It was an album listening party for an Artist that I had never heard of, by the name of PJ Morton. Sunset Brown of Homegrowne sang his songs and in addition to that, they got to do a few of their own. The whole set up was dope. Sunsets outfit was a 30s era inspiration, Mel was more Hip Hop with a grown man twist and the rest of the band wore suits. Each one complimenting the other. Sunset sang PJs songs like they were her own and for that he should be proud. She was great!

After a quick break, it was time for Homegrowne to bless their fans and well as the people who had never heard the awesome sound they produce and hit us with their own flavor. As I thought, they won the ears and souls of the people who hadn’t been fortunate to hear them. They did one of my favorite songs Celebrity and blew my mind with a new song titled Los Angeles. I loved that song, the whole place did. It gave everybody in the audience energy. You could tell in the way we all sang “Los Angeleeeees” that we were fed up with that JayZ anthem ,New York. It spoke about the Staple Center, Slauson and how we can go to the beach in the Winter. Los Angeles is going to be a Summer time banger!

It was hosted by PLEI. 734 E 3rd street, downtown, Los Angeles. If you’re aren’t familiar with the area, you just might pass the place up. The setting was nice and relaxing and the crowd was soothing. We all sat back and enjoyed the show. PJ Morton has some pretty cool songs and I’m actually looking forward to hearing his whole album.

Hip Hop has “Growne” up

Homegrowne is a compelling ensemble of artist who are exceptional in their own right, that assembled together to create L.A.’s most exciting new sound.

With a sound that one reviewer called “Hop Rock Soul,” Homegrowne effortlessly blends rock, rap, and soul, into explosive performances that has Los Angeles audiences cheering and coming back for more. Just as good to look at as they are to hear, the members have style and captivating personalities that come together in a cohesive one of a kind presentation.

With content that is based on community, love, and pride, the South Los Angeles band is a representation of everything you love and loathe about L.A: from the hardcore realities of poverty, drugs and crime; to the glamour, fashion, style, and fun of the fast life.

The visionary and emcee of the group is Mellroz, is an entrepreneur that owns businesses in South L.A. As an artist, he displays extraordinary rap skill comparable to early artist like Rakim, but with a new school swagger and flair that the ladies love and the men respect. He smoothly transitions from song to song with quick comedic interactions with the crowd before they are brought to their feet by the groups entrancing vibe.

Songstress Sunset Brown, is also a community activist, but once she hits the stage she adds just the right amount of sultry sound and sexiness to the band. She has unique voice that been compared to Chaka Khan and a style like Gwen Stefani. In her trademark fishnets and heels she doubles as the bands hype girl, who has held her own in ciphers across the U.S.

The musicians have a delightful blend of influences and expertise. Keys Player Lance-a-lot brings gospel influenced hip hop flavor, phenomenal soul influenced drumming by Mike Dame, topped off with funk inspired sounds and moves by Gajet, the bands bass player.

Homegrowne is not just a band, it’s a new music movement that is on its way to captivate today’s mainstream. Get to know them now, and witness this indescribable show. Homegrowne is the future, and with the coming release of their 1st Album, 2010 will be their year.
