Woodson Def. Player of the year
I was all too excited to hear that Charles Woodson of the Green Bay Packers won Defensive POY. I’m not a Packers fan but a Woodson fan. My love for Woodsons game goes back to the ’90s when he was a Wolverine. His game spoke for itself and everybody recognized it. He won Big 10 freshman of the year in 1995. In 1997 not only did the Wolverines go undefeated, Woodson won the Heisman AND a National Championship.
I loved Woodson even more in 1998 when he became an Oakland Raider, as soon as they pressed a #24 jersey, I got one. Woodson was drafted the first round, 4th overall. He was a beast on the field winning the Rookie Defensive Player of the Year and named to the Pro Bowl. He led the DBs in tackles and was top 5 in the league in interceptions. Woodson was one with the field, anybody that knew football, knew that.
In 2006, I felt my world shake. Woodson would no longer wear Silver and Black and no longer wear #24. He would wear green and wear #21, calling himself a…a… a Packer. I couldn’t believe it. My heart dropped. Even though he was no longer a Raider he was still my favorite player and I still rocks the #24 Woodson Raider jersey.
In his first year as a Packer, he led the NFL in interceptions with 8. Green Bay even used him as a Punt Returner. While at Green Bay he’s received NFC Defensive Player of Week in 2007 and Player of the Month in September of 2008 and 2009 and November(also won player of the week in Nov.) and December of 2009 as well. That makes him the 3rd player to receive this award 3 times in a single season.
Woodson still works hard, he still gives 100% and can compete with WR that are 10 years younger than he is. He has 28 interceptions as a Packer and had 17 as a Raider. Woodson has 8 touchdowns as a Packer and 6 with the Raiders and as much as I hate to admit it, his stats get better each year in Green Bay. Charles Woodson holds the Packers record for defensive touchdowns at 8 and 7 of those pick 6 and one fumble return. Woodson has 74 tackles, 66 of them solo, 2 sacks, 4 forced fumbles; 9 interceptions and 3 TD returns. He is more than worthy to receive the Defensive Player of the Year in 2009.
Now it’s some that say Revis of the Jets should win and I can’t seem to figure out why and no one has an answer for me. He locked down recievers.. Okay. Well Woodson let Fitzgerald get two Tds on him. One of which was offensive PI..and you shouldnt let the last game stick your head, were talking about a season. Next?! I looked at Revis’ stats and he has 54 tackles, 47 solo, 6 interceptions and 1 TD return. Rex Ryan says that 8 is the number, eight is the number because that’s how many TD passes they allowed and the people that voted for Revis “really knows the game”. Ryan also went to say “This, in my opinion, was the best year a corner has ever had, the most impact a corner has ever had in the National Football League…” Revis did lead the league in passes defended with 31 compared to Woodsons 21, so I guess its a good thing it’s called Defensive Player of the Year and not Cornerback of the year huh Rex? Quarterbacks avoid Woodson like they do Revis so I’m still not sure why Revis is more worthy than Woodson and I’m glad I don’t have to be. Woodson is the Defensive Player of the Year for 2009. Have fun at the Pro Bowl Revis, 2010 is right around the corner. No Pun intended.
